Best BetsThe Second Chance Animal Shelter will conduct pet adoptions from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at PetSmart and Petco.
The adoption fee for dogs is $120, which includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, vet check and microchip.
The adoption fee for adult cats is $50 and $45 for kittens.
Visit the shelter at 5501 Clear Creek Road (two miles north of the Killeen airport) to see animals ready for adoption. It's open from noon to 5 p.m. weekdays and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends.

"Fool's Gold or The Pernicious Prospector's Prevaricating Ploy" is the Salado Silver Spur's sixth annual original melodrama. In this chapter, the peaceful Village of Salado succumbs to an outbreak of "gold fever" brought on by the villainous Jason J. Jargonaut. Can Ranger Grainger save Marigold Feingold and the Salado citizenry from the peril that ensues? The show serves up slapstick, song and satire plus a silent "movieola" featuring local citizens and pie fights. Central Texas College is hosting the first-ever GeekFest to celebrate all things science fiction, gaming, technology, anime, fantasy and related genres. The event will be Aug. 27-29 and feature fun for all ages, including gaming tournaments with cash prizes, sci-fi and gaming seminars, costume contests, a sci-fi film festival, sci-fi writing workshops, door prizes and silent auction on Friday and Saturday. Scout merit badge programs are scheduled for Sunday.

MuseumsActive-duty service members and their families will gain free access to hundreds of museums throughout the nation this summer. More than 600 museums in 50 states and the District of Columbia have signed up to participate in Operation Appreciation: Blue Star Museums. The program offers active-duty service members — including activated Guard and Reserve — and up to five of their immediate family members free admission to participating museums through Labor Day.
