The New Hope Seventh-Day Adventist Church of Killeen will host a three-day event reaching out to soldiers and families in Fort Hood and Killeen.
About 180 youth and six area churches are expected to take part. The event, sponsored by the North Central Texas Youth Federation/Southwest Region Conference of Seventh-Day Adventist, kicks off today at the Shilo Inn and ends Sunday.
"We're teaching (the youth) how to give back to their community," event organizer Lorraine Thames said. "They also wanted to show appreciation to the service."
The participants will be placed into five "missionary groups" focusing on different aspects of ministry. One group will present a vacation Bible school session, while others paint the United Way/Red Cross building at Fort Hood and conduct a puppet show at the downtown Killeen Boys and Girls Club.
The participants are tackling large projects like a parade Saturday at 3 p.m. on Stan Schlueter Loop and a free concert at 7 p.m. Saturday at Howze Auditorium at Fort Hood. Scheduled to perform are: Marie Long, contemporary Christian music; Vision mass choir; Trailblazers, a drum corps; D4C, Hawaiian performance; Dallas Fellowship Male Choir; Groove & Ruel youth rap; and Pauline Hunt, gospel music.
"We're inviting the community to come and participate in all the events," Thames said.
