Killeen Daily HeraldHARKER HEIGHTS — Parks and Recreation plans a Family Fun Night from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Harker Heights Community Park, 1501 E. Farm-to-Market 2410.
"We just wanted to get people to the park," said Joe Brown, Parks and Recreation athletics coordinator.
Family Fun Night consists of activities for both adults and children, Brown said.
There will be a home-run derby for adults, and a pitch, hit and run competition for children 7 to 13 years old.
The derby will be for both men and women and will cost $10 for Harker Heights Parks and Recreation players and $20 for others to enter.
"That money is going back to the winners," Brown said.
Sixty percent will go to the first-place finisher, 25 percent to second place and 15 percent to third place, Brown said.
The pitch, hit and run competition is free and has two divisions: ages 7 to 10 and ages 11 to 13.
Brown said Parks and Recreation has generated some good local business support of these events.
It will give out Dick's Sporting Goods gift cards and trophies to the winners.
Other activities include a huge jumping castle from Safari InflatableRock, a climbing wall from Boulders, a military K9 demo team, a live radio remote from 107.3 Fox, Mama's Soul Concessions and door prizes from community businesses.
Parks and Recreation officials hope to make Family Fun Night an annual event that gets more residents involved in local activities, Brown said.
"That is our main job at Parks and Rec — to get our community involved," Brown said. "The main goal of this is just to get the community out and together."
