The deadline for applications for those looking to get an inside peek at the Killeen Police Department and learn how officers operate is fast approaching.

Next Friday, Aug. 6, is the final deadline for applications for KPD's Citizen's Police Academy. Applications must be in by 5 p.m. Classes begin Aug. 16. Enrollment is limited to 30 students.

Classes will demonstrate the inner workings of the police department. Students will work with several divisions within the department including organized crime, narcotics, gangs and SWAT.

"We teach them the operations and functions of the police department," program coordinator Tammy Moseley said.

Classes are Monday nights from 7 to 10, as well as one Saturday class. Classes run through Nov. 1.

This term will be the first at the new police headquarters, located at 3304 Community Blvd. and include up-close training with SWAT, a visit to the department's gun range and demonstrations by the K-9 unit, Moseley said.

All applicants must agree to a background check, which includes a criminal history check, before being accepted.

Applications are available at the department. Moseley said she would also e-mail applications to those interested. She can be reached at tmoseley@ci.killeen.tx.us.

As an added bonus, all graduates of the academy are approved for volunteer activities with KPD and ride-alongs with police officers.

"Once you go through the CPA, you'll understand there may be an area you're more interested in. Maybe that's an area you want to volunteer in," KPD spokeswoman Carroll Smith said.

The department benefits from the program because it helps clear up misconceptions about police, Moseley said.

"It alleviates some of those misconceptions. A lot of people don't understand that there is a purpose for why we do anything," she said.
