Woman's class ring found after 36 yearsHOUSTON — A woman has been reunited with the high school class ring she lost in 1974 after archeologists working at the San Jacinto battlefield unearthed it.
Just weeks after Judith Goode Fesler exchanged class rings with her then-boyfriend in the summer of 1974, the couple was hanging out at the battlefield and her ring flew off his pinky finger. They searched, but couldn't find it.
On Wednesday, the park superintendent handed her the 1973 class ring from Deer Park High School with her initials on it.
The Houston Chronicle reports that a volunteer found the ring about 4 inches below the surface. Fesler, who lives in Kerrville, was identified through a list of 1973 graduates maintained by the high school's alumni association.
Top Texas criminal judge appeals rebukeAUSTIN — The presiding judge of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals is appealing a judicial conduct panel's reprimand of her handling of an execution-day appeal.
The State Commission on Judicial Conduct had issued a "public warning," one of the least severe sanctions at its disposal, to Judge Sharon Keller. That's after Keller said "We close at 5" and closed the court as attorneys for a twice-convicted killer scrambled to file a last-minute appeal for Michael Wayne Richard. With no appeal filed, Richard was put to death that night for the 1986 rape and slaying of a Houston-area nurse.
The Austin American-Statesman reported Thursday that, in appealing the July 16 reprimand, Keller attorney Chip Babcock argued the panel violated the Texas Constitution, which she said forbids such a warning. Babcock called upon the justices to order the commission to expunge the warning from all records and dismiss all charges against Keller.
