NOLANVILLE – Ten candidates filed to seek three city offices in May's municipal election. Five people in the race are related to one another and many are longtime residents.

Sisters Denise Hungerford, 55, and Sandra Darlene Freeman, 57, are both running to fill council seats.

Two at-large council seats are up for election in May, as well as the mayor's seat.

Hungerford is a homemaker and a veteran on the council. She was elected to two full terms and was also chosen by council members to fill a vacancy on the governing body. She has lived in Nolanville for almost 12 years. Hungerford also occasionally serves on the city's Parks Committee.

Freeman has worked in nursing facilities and moved to the city from New York to be with her sister. She has lived in the city for two years. Freeman is a member of the city's Parks Committee.

Incumbent Skip Matthews, 68; his former wife and former Mayor Carolyn Sterling, 65; and their daughter, Brenda Huckaba, 49, are in the race for a council seat.

Matthews retired after 21 years in the Army and several years of civil service work at Fort Hood. He is serving his first term on the council and has lived in the city for 37 years. He is also a member of Disabled American Veterans 22.

Sterling is retired from Scott & White Hospital in Temple, where she worked for 28 years as a nurse. She occasionally works at King's Daughters Hospital. She served as mayor from 2006 to 2008 and served a single term on the council in the 1980s.

Huckaba is a transporter for a nursing facility and used to work in the early childhood development industry. Huckaba ran for the council in 2009 but lost by about 30 votes. She has lived in Nolanville for 17 years.

The other three residents seeking a council seat are: Jennifer Ann Dellinger, 32, Wayne Drew Hamilton, 67, and Theresa Cochran, 77.

Dellinger is seeking an associate degree in elementary education before obtaining a bachelor's degree and a teaching certifice. She is the Nolanville Girl Scout troop leader, and volunteers at Eastern Hills Middle School and Cavazos Elementary School. She is a member of the Parks Committee. Dellinger has lived in Nolanville for six years.

Incumbent Hamilton has served two unexpired terms on the council. He was elected for one term and was selected by the council for the second term. He retired from the Army after 28 years and served 12 years as a firefighter, two of which he was fire chief.

Hamilton is on the Killeen Volunteers Inc. Board, an American Legion trustee, on the Nolanville Volunteer Fire Department Board, chaplain of DAV 22, a former Nolanville Planning and Zoning Commission member and a former vice president of the Warrant Officer Association. Hamilton has lived in the city for about five years.

Cochran has worked at Fort Hood and transported people for the airport. She is a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and a former American Legion 573 Auxiliary president. She as run for the council before but never served on the governing body. Cochran has lived in the city for 15 years.

The mayoral candidates are incumbent Emma McCullough, 62, and Charlie L. Stewart Sr., 56.

McCullough has served one unexpired term as mayor. She also served an unexpired term on the council and held two full terms.

She is the co-leader of the Nolanville Girl Scout troop, and has lived in Nolanville for 28 years.

Stewart has instructed teachers on how to integrate technology in the classroom for the last 11 years. He has owned a business in Nolanville and is currently running one in Harker Heights. He is retired from the Army with 20 years of service.

He has lived in the city for almost 20 years, and this is the third time he has run for mayor.
