The Cove HeraldCoveites now have a new spot to cool down and grab a frozen treat as the days get longer and
temperatures climb.
On Monday, Jason and Shelley Kirk officially opened Frigid Frog, a shaved ice franchise on East U.S. Highway 190 near Wigs Plus.
Jason Kirk said the family has been making snow cones at home for years. The couple's children 10-year-old Cammie and 16-year-old Emily Williams are old hands at shaved ice.
"We've been doing snow cones since I was 10, and little stands at garage sales," said Williams, who now works behind the counter.
When his wife wanted to open a stand or trailer, Kirk took it one step further to opening a store.
"I think I'm more excited about it than anyone," he said. "And I think this is good for the community."
The brightly painted tables and walls may be kid-friendly, but the snow cones aren't just for families and children.
"It's for whoever wants to have the joy of shaved ice," Kirk said. "I love it. I've already had one today and I'll probably have one later."
So far his favorites are the fireball with a scoop of ice cream in the bottom and sour apple with a sour squirt.
He hasn't tried all the flavors yet, but Kirk and Williams both said, "I'm working on it."
Williams said she already loves her fun new job, and she likes seeing what people order. Her favorite flavor is the ocean mist with a sour squirt.
The store serves shaved ice in sizes from the 8-ounce tadpole to the 32-ounce bullfrog with a variety of flavors that can be served over a scoop of ice cream, or even with a dill pickle "buried in snow."
They have special flavors like Barbie (wedding cake and cotton candy) and Batman (black cherry and banana) and are working on creating their own. On Wednesday a strip of paper with the newest combination was added to the menu board, fruit cobbler — a scoop of ice cream, vanilla, fruit syrup and whipped cream
"And it's only the third day," Williams said.
Other items
The store also serves other family-friendly summertime foods from hot dogs and Frito pies to nachos. Kirk said its a kind of little "cafe" and he plans to add outdoor tables to the brightly painted picnic benches inside.
The store also has wireless Internet and sells candy.
The family moved to Copperas Cove in 2007 and Kirk hopes to retire in the area.Further down the line and after he retires — if things go well — Kirk said he'd like to have a mobile trailer to take snow cones to special events and maybe open a second shop.
The store is open from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday; from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday; from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday; and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The store is closed Monday and Tuesday.
Kirk said the hours will probably change in the summer, with longer hours and opening six days a week.
