Killeen Daily HeraldCOPPERAS COVE – The Copperas Cove school board Tuesday approved a $380,000 budget amendment to hire the construction manager for the proposed new elementary school, but next month's board meeting could decide the project's future.
At its January meeting, the Copperas Cove Independent School District board approved hiring Baird Williams Construction as the construction manager at-risk for an 800-student school at Lutheran Church Road and Coy Drive.
At Tuesday's regular board meeting, members voted to move the $380,000 cost for services to the district's budget from the facilities fund set aside for the school's construction.
With the construction manager on board, the district can seek bids for the total construction cost. Those bids are due on March 17, and the final cost will determine whether the project goes forward, said Superintendent Rose Cameron.
Cameron said she hopes to have a guaranteed maximum price for the overall cost of construction by the March 23 board meeting.
"Then we'll have a definite decision not only on whether we're going to build, but what we're going to build," she said.
In other action, board members approved sending a class-size waiver to the state for several classes at Martin Walker Elementary School and J.L. Williams/Lovett Ledger Elementary School that have exceeded the state mandated 22-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio for kindergarten through fourth grade.
The district also accepted a $22,532 check from the Copperas Cove Public Education Foundation for classroom grants.
Also Tuesday, the board approved the election order and officials for the May 8 election. Three positions on the school board are open. Incumbents Joan Manning and Mike Wilburn have already filed for re-election.
