COPPERAS COVE – Friday night was Linda Rebernik's first art show.

The Copperas Cove artist began studying art just five years ago after moving to Cove in 2003.

"I always wanted to do art, go to art school, I just never had the opportunity," she said.

Rebernik was the featured artist for First Friday, a near-monthly event at Frames and Things in Copperas Cove featuring artists from around the greater Fort Hood area.

Owner Monica Weidinger has been throwing the First Friday parties for the past three years at the store, which serves as a gallery and framing store.

"I know the artists appreciate it, and I think it does really well and brings a little culture to Copperas Cove," she said. "And we have a lot of really nice talent around here."

Weidinger said the store has rarely had to rebook local artists, and this year's schedule is completely filled. She said about 80 to 100 people come throughout the night.

Harker Heights resident Samra Thompson said she tries to make it to every First Friday. Thompson said this time though, she came specifically to see Rebernik's work after seeing one of her paintings in a competition. With local artists, the event allows Thompson to see other sides of their skills.

"You don't always get to see a person's full body of work, what they're capable of," she said.

Rebernik, a mother of three and grandmother of six, said seeing the crowd that packed the store on Friday validated the last five years of her training to be an artist.

"I'm amazed at what they are saying," she said.

Weidinger said artists come in regularly asking to do a First Friday show, and she looks particularly for seasoned artists. With Rebernik's art, Weidinger said she likes the feel of it.

"I love her art too because it's very cheerful, and vibrant," Weidinger said.

First Friday runs for nine months out of the year on the first Friday of the month from 6 to 9 p.m. The work of the artist featured at the event remains on display in the store's gallery for the full month.
