The Flyers 92, a girls Division II U18 competitive soccer team, advanced to the state playoffs Dec. 12-13 in San Antonio, where it finished fourth with two ties and one loss.

On the weekend of Dec. 6, at the district tournament in Cedar Park, the Flyers 92 finished second with one loss, one tie and one win.

The team lost its first game 3-1 on a frost-covered field early on Dec. 5. Vanessa Maldonado scored the Flyers' goal.

Then, in dramatic fashion, with time runniong out on their season, the Flyers tied the eventual district champions 1-1 with a last-second goal by Maldonado under the lights at Williamson County Regional Park.

Despite that win, the Flyers returned to action the next day with only a remote possibility of advancing to the state playoffs. They needed a shutout win by at least three goals and a favorable outcome in a game between two other teams.

On that cold and wet morning, the Flyers did their part, winning convincingly 3-0 over the Rockport Dragons with goals by Ozias Ellis, Arantza Trejo and Raquel Maldonado.

And they got the help they needed when the Austin Exodus Pumas beat the San Antonio Hornets 1-0.

The Flyers 92 are a new team that formed this year and are made up of players from Belton, Copperas Cove, Ellison, Harker Heights, and Shoemaker high schools.

The team is coached by Mark Zimmerman and is part of Tri-County Soccer Club which is part of the Capitol Area Youth Soccer Association.
