Killeen Daily HeraldThe temperature was low and the wind was brisk, but dozens waited in line anticipating the arrival of Santa Claus.
For the sixth annual Copperas Cove Christmas tree-lighting ceremony, the city decided to add a few extras.
In its new location behind City Hall, the Copperas Cove Chamber of Commerce and Visitor's Bureau offered the use of several three dimensional-lighted yard decorations that surrounded the 20-foot tree.
In addition, one family had the opportunity to pull the oversized candy cane that lit the tree.
"We thought it would be nice for more people to enjoy it and have it in a nice location where it's more visible," Chamber of Commerce Vice President Betty Price said Tuesday. "Through a joint effort, we were able to have the Christmas tree-lighting ceremony in the back lot."
Thursday's tree lighting was the first time some attendees saw Santa this year.
Joelle Hawkins, 7, was at the front of the line ready to hand Santa her list.
"I want Moxie girls, a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader doll and a Santa and reindeer night light," Joelle said.
Five-year-old Kyrah Hill anticipated the visit to Santa with her grandmother, Brenda Huey, who brings her every year.
Kyrah said she hopes for a Barbie doll, the tooth Play-Doh and a SpongeBob game.
"A scooter!" exclaimed Melissa Hooper, 5, while waiting in line with her mother. "I want a helicopter. A toy helicopter."
Rachel Crawford brought her 9- and 3-year-old sons to see Santa, but 3-year-old Aiden Crawford was more excited.
Aiden said he wanted anything that's blue.
Jacob Louder, 3, pondered what he wanted before he decided on a mouse toy and a bull.
It looks like there's more people this year because there's more space filled," Ken Wilson, director of community services, said.
