Family duo medals
in martial arts meet
On Nov. 8, Jarrod Clontz and his stepson Michael Duran competed in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi World Championships in Long Beach, Calif. They had been training for this event for four months and both came home with two medals each.
Their competitors were from all over the world, from North Carolina, California, Brazil and England.
Clontz earned a gold medal in the Brown Belt Sr. Heavyweight division, and a silver in the open weight division.
Duran picked up a bronze medal in the Blue Belt Juvenile middleweight division and a silver in the open weight division.
Clontz began training in martial arts when he was 8. He has done karate, judo and Japanese-style jujitsu. He has been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for 12 years. He earned his brown belt through Tony Torres-Aponte, who is a Royce Gracie Black Belton out of Houston.
Duran began his jiu-jitsu training at age 7. He has received all of his training from Clontz. Only recently has Brazilian jiu-jitsu become popular with all age groups. However, this was not the case when Duran was a child. He trained with much bigger and older partners, which has turned out to be an advantage.
Clontz and Duran train at American Fight Company in downtown Killeen. Training there consists of both sport jiu-jitsu and self defense. Sport jiu-jitsu is learned for the purpose of competitions. However, not everyone participating in Brazilian jiu-jitsu competes. Self defense is implemented into the lessons regularly.
Clontz feels that the jiu-jitsu training he does with Duran has built a lifelong bond.
"When we are training and going through hard times on the mat, you need someone there to push you and to be there for you. That's what Michael and I have."
