Harker Heights to advance city animal shelter project

Killeen Daily HeraldThe Harker Heights City Council is expected to select a contractor for the new animal shelter today.
The City Council, which will meet at 3 p.m., is expected to designate a contractor for the city's animal shelter, which will be built at Indian Trail and Clore Road.
The council reviewed a list of contractors that submitted construction proposals at a Nov. 3 workshop meeting. Members discussed how the proposals were scored and which contractor received the highest score.
Mayor Ed Mullen said the scoring system might have been flawed, and requested the proposals be recalculated before the council chooses a contractor.
The new animal shelter will replace the shelter on Harley Drive behind the old police station.
The new facility will more than double the number of dog kennels and cat cages as well as have a larger quarantine area.
The council will also:
Conduct a public hearing to consider an ordinance to change the zoning designation from a single-family dwelling district to two-family at 921 Maplewood Drive.
Conduct a public hearing to consider an ordinance to change the zoning designation from a single-family dwelling district to two-family at 923 Maplewood Drive.
Consider a resolution authorizing the city manager to pursue Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant funding.
Hear a presentation on the 2010 U.S. Census.
Hear an update on the city's capital improvement projects.
Receive the city's crime rate report.
Conduct a closed meeting with the city's attorney about a lawsuit related to Nolanville's population count and the size of Nolanville's extraterritorial jurisdiction.
