Killeen crash kills woman Posted On: Monday, Nov. 16 2009 05:16 AM Bookmark and Share
From staff reports

A Round Rock woman was killed and three people were injured in a two-vehicle collision early Sunday in the 11000 block of Fort Hood Street, Killeen police said.

Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke pronounced Beverly Leeann Baker, 28, of Round Rock, dead at 3:30 a.m. and ordered an autopsy at the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas, police spokeswoman Carroll Smith said.

Police had not released the names of the injured people by Sunday evening.

The 26-year-old driver of a 2003 Jeep Wrangler was airlifted to Scott & White Hospital in Temple with severe burns and was expected to be transferred to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. The police report said he lives in Killeen.

The report said officers were responding to a report of a Jeep traveling north in the southbound lane of the highway when the report of the accident came in about 3 a.m.

A preliminary investigation determined that the northbound Jeep swerved to miss another vehicle and started to yaw, resulting in a collision with a 1993 Buick Regal behind the vehicle the Jeep avoided. The Jeep then rolled and burst into flames.

Baker was the front-seat passenger in the Regal. Two others in the car were taken to Scott & White with non-life threatening injuries, Smith said. The driver was a 38-year-old Austin resident and the rear seat passenger a 30-year-old Georgetown resident. One was a man and the other a woman.

Smith said the investigation was continuing and more information will be available.
