Football Roundup: Gatesville goes for 2, but loses in overtime Posted On: Saturday, Nov. 7 2009 05:40 AM Bookmark and Share
CHINA SPRING – Jake Truss threw for 363 yards and five touchdowns, but his most important pass failed and the Gatesville Hornets lost to China Spring 42-41 on Friday in the regular season finale.

Down by one in overtime, the Hornets went for the two-point conversion.

They did not get it, fell to the Cougars and missed out on winning a piece of the District 7-3A crown. With only 1:01 remaining in regulation, Gatesville looked like it had sewn up a win when Truss hit Nardi Meyers, who caught five passes for 183 yards, for a 41-yard touchdown pass.

However, China Spring's Michael Armstrong scored on a 1-yard dive with 16 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.

Gatesville jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter thanks to not one, but two 3-yard touchdown passes from Truss to Cody Cryer. However, Armstrong, who ran for 65 yards on 15 carries, scored on runs of 1 and 20 yards to get the Cougars back in the game.

Truss also led the Hornets with 115 yards rushing on 19 carries.

A&M Consolidated 38, Ellison 20 – At College Station, with 321 rushing yards and three touchdowns combined from Chris Nutall and Clifton Banks, A&M Consolidated locked up a share of the District 12-5A title.

After Eagles junior David Cobb started the scoring off with a 68-yard touchdown run, the Tigers (7-3, 6-1) answered loudly with 31 straight points, including a 17-0 spurt in the second quarter that was capped with a 42-yard fumble return by Harley York to go into halftime leading 24-7.

Consol then padded its lead by scoring first in the second half with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Consol senior quarterback Rickey Smith to Nutall.

Ellison (4-6, 2-5) finally got back on the board late in the third quarter thanks to a 35-yard touchdown run by junior fullback/linebacker Devon Hocutt, who finished with a team-high 149 yards on 18 carries.

Nutall finished with 204 yards and two scores while Banks added 117 yards and touchdown.

Academy 36, Florence 25 –

At Florence, Doak Hensley threw for 146 yards and the Buffaloes held their own with the Academy Bumblebees for nearly three quarters. It just was not enough as they fell in the two teams' season finale. The two teams were tied 22-22 midway through the third quarter.

However, the Bumblebees (6-4, 3-3 in 25-2A) scored the last two touchdowns of the game and prevailed 36-25.

Academy's defense sacked Florence (2-8, 1-5) in the end zone for a safety and Matt Brenek then burst free for a 35-yard score. Florence answered with a 15-yard touchdown run by Brian Ross, who rushed 16 times for 73 yards, but Layton Willis gave Academy a 15-7 lead in the second quarter.

Florence later scored on a 2-yard pass from Hensley to Trey Simpson in the third quarter, but Bernek threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Brent Fritz as the Bees retook the lead again. Once again, though, Florence came back with a score of its own. Fullback Travis Applequist bruised his way to a 26-yard TD run.

Temple 44, Shoemaker 32 – At Leo Buckley Stadium, Lache Seastrunk ran for 305 yards and four touchdowns on 31 carries as Temple defeated Shoemaker.

His counterpart in the backfield was not far behind him. Derrick Davis ran for 202 yards on 41 carries.

However, they did not provide all of the offensive fireworks. Shoemaker's Jammie Blount was 17-of-41 passing for 278 yards and two touchdowns and Raymond Felton added a 76-yard TD run for the Grey Wolves. Felton also caught seven passes for 146 yards – including a 60-yard TD pass from Blount in the fourth quarter.

The Wolves just could not stop the Temple ground game, which churned out 547 yards on 81 attempts.
