COPPERAS COVE – The Copperas Cove City Council approved the date for a public hearing to get the ball rolling on the tax abatement process for a proposed assisted living facility in the city.

Stoney Brook of Copperas Cove, a 60-unit assisted living facility, is ready to begin construction, but is awaiting an infrastructure reimbursement that is pending through the Copperas Cove Economic Development Corp. and the tax abatement awaiting council approval still.

Mike Beevers with Stoney Brook said, "We're ready to go. We've been trying to get this project to fruition for a number of months."

According to a timeline produced by city staff, the earliest date for a public hearing to designate the reinvestment zone, which is 5.02 acres of land behind Walmart on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, is Nov. 17, and the earliest date to consider a request from the developers of the assisted living center is Dec. 1.

The facility is projected to create 16 to 18 jobs at startup and generate $2.5 million in sales per year at 90 percent occupancy.

In other business, the council approved a budget amendment hearing that grants CHAMPS an additional $10,000 from the Hotel Occupancy Tax Fund.

Betty Price of CHAMPS said there will be a projected 3,000 people in attendance at the HOT Bowl game with 455 hotel rooms in the city filled.
