Altrusa International Inc. of Copperas Cove conducted its annual golf tournament and fundraiser Oct. 17 at the Hills of Cove Golf course. There were nine teams of four competing for awards and gifts.

First-place team members and winners of $100 each were Martin Ruiz, Bryan Ruiz, Menterro Sanchez and Fernando Sanchez.

The second-place team members and winners of $75 each were David Sims and Hannah Sims.

The fifth-place team members and winners of $20 each were Danny Binion, Heath Harper, Randall Rhoades and Mike McDaniels.

The seventh-place team members and winners of green fees and cart rentals from Hills of copperas Cove Golf Course were Mary Pearson, Sandi Wood, Dorothy Granfor and Brigid McIntyre-Diaz.

Mark Gist and Ann Graham were both winners for the closest to the pin. The team that finished last won free golf lessons.

The local club members are involved in many service projects, especially those in literacy. They meet the second and fourth Tuesday at noon at Giovanni's Italian restaurant.

Altrusa supplies and distributes books to first-, second- and third-grade students, as well as for children in Headstart, provides scholarships, and provides recreational and large print reading material for residents in local nursing homes.

They additionally provide newspapers for classrooms, fund adult reading programs, give school supplies to children in need and support the Boys & Girls Club and the YMCA Teen Center.
