The Exchange Club of Copperas Cove honored a local citizen for patriotism at its meeting Wednesday and received an update on the expansion of patient care and facilities at Metroplex Hospital.

Bob Goodwin offered the morning prayer, and Joe Palumbo led the pledges to the American and the Texas flags.

Club President Kipp Miller welcomed guests Janie French and Marian Palumbo.

Miller reminded members of the activities for the National Day of Service Oct. 24 at the Exchange Sunshine Apartments for the annual grounds beautification project.

The club will have a busy day Saturday, beginning with a "Flapjack Fund Raiser" at Applebee's between 8 and 10 a.m. Members were urged to sell their packets of tickets.

Also, members were reminded to bring sacks of candies to the club meeting next week, to provide treats for use at the club's booth that will be a part of the Safe Halloween Downtown on Saturday.

Carlyle Walton, president/CEO of Metroplex Health System, gave a review of the history of the health facility, dating back to its beginnings as a one-story building.

He showed pictures of the growth and expansion of the physical facility, and also listed the wide variety of specialists who are now serving on the staff.

Walton also reviewed the recent affiliation with Scott and White Healthcare of Temple, and stated the merger brings additional health care to the citizens of Killeen and Copperas Cove.

Miller presented an Exchange Club coffee mug to Walton for his informative presentation.

Mark Peterson, chair of the Americanism Committee, introduced Don Knotts, whose display of the American flag at his home is outstanding. Peterson presented Knotts with a plaque to commemorate the "Proudly We Hail" award of the quarter.

Peterson announced the club's "Rush Party" will be conducted on Nov. 14, in an effort to introduce more individuals to the club's mission and activities, encouraging them to join the club.

Michael Tate reported that some additional sponsorship funds have been received for the Oct. 10 golf tournament, and thanked everyone for assisting in all aspects of the event.

Meals on Wheels will be delivered by Exchange Club members this Friday.

Next week's program will honor the ACE of the Month, a student who has met some challenges in his or her young life, which may have easily led to the temptation to drop out of school, but has overcome them and is progressing toward high school graduation.

The community service organization meets everyb Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. at Li'l Tex Restaurant. Guests are always welcome to visit.
