UMHB men's basketball picked to win ASC west

BELTON – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team was picked to win the American Southwest Conference West Division championship in the league's annual Preseason Poll, which was released Tuesday.
The Cru picked up 10 first-place votes and totaled 169 points in balloting of West Division coaches, sports information directors and media representatives.
McMurry University is picked to finish second with nine first-place votes and 166 total points, while Concordia picked up four first-place votes and 154 total points to take third place. Hardin-Simmons was picked to finish fourth, Sul Ross State fifth, Howard Payne sixth and Schreiner picked up the other first-place vote and 53 total points for seventh place, while Texas Lutheran was the picked to finish last.
Concordia senior forward Brad Walker was voted ASC West
Division Preseason Player of the Year and LeTourneau senior guard Dale Vanwright was named ASC East Division Preseason Player of the Year.
Defending ASC champion UT–Dallas was picked to win the East again with 13 first-place votes and 133 total points, edging out Mississippi College's seven first-place votes and 125 total points.
The Cru went 19-8 overall and 16-5 in ASC play last season and advanced to the ASC Championship Tournament semifinals before falling to UT–Dallas.
UMHB soccer player earns honor – UMHB men's soccer player Daniel Green was named American Southwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 19.
Green, a senior defender, led a UMHB (11-2, 9-1) defense that posted back-to-back shutouts last week and allowed just nine total combined shots on goal in a 2-0 victory over Mississippi College and an 8-0 win over Louisiana College. The two shutouts last week give the Cru an ASC high eight shutouts on the season.
UMHB women's golf takes third – The UMHB women's golf team improved by 11 strokes Tuesday as the Cru women finished in third place at the Schreiner Fall Classic in Kerrville.
The UMHB women fired a 667-team total and finished 15 strokes behind team champion UT–Tyler's 652 team score. Tournament host Schreiner claimed second place after posting a 662, five shots ahead of the Cru women.
Amanda Hebert posted the top individual finish for the Cru women. Hebert shot 81-82, 163 and took sixth place individually. Allison Williams posted an 87-81, 168 for UMHB and tied for 12th, Christi Williams fired a 170 to tie for 14th, Catherine Andrews shot 88 and 84 and finished in 17th. Alexandra Taylor recorded an 176 and tied for 18th and Courtney Nelson's 83-99 was good for 20th.
Brady Viertel of Our Lady of the Lake won the individual title in a scorecard playoff after shooting a 78 both days.
UMHB men's golf takes second –
The UMHB men's golf team made a run on the tournament's final day and the Cru finished second at the Schreiner Fall Classic Tuesday in Kerrville behind UT-Tyler.
The UMHB men fired a 288 and a 292 for a 580 team total and finished just four shots off the lead. Concordia Texas was third place with a 592.
Aaron Massey posted the top individual finish for the UMHB men, winning a scorecard playoff to take second place. Massey shot 67 and 73 and tied UT–Tyler's Brandon Ellis and was one stroke behind individual champion Joey Rippel's (UT–Tyler).
Mike McQuaid fired a 145 for the Cru and tied for fifth place to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team alongside Massey, while Garrison Nordt fired a 146 for the Cru and tied for 11th .
