Harker Heights High School students kicked off a week of festivities leading up to their homecoming Friday with a Student Council-organized carnival Saturday afternoon with many activities benefitting charitable causes as well as their own activities.

Inside the building were a ring toss, a dart throw, a face painting booth, a cake walk and lots of food including wurst offered by the German club and oriental foods by the Asian students organization. Bush's Chicken donated gallons of tea to be sold for fundraising.

One of the most comic events was "sumo wrestling" where students were dressed in huge padded suits to waddle toward each other and collide like human bumper cars. Once down, all they could do was roll around until their friends set them upright again for rematches.

Outside the building were a moon bounce, a dunking tank, and a junk car bash where patrons could buy tickets to whale away with a sledgehammer at an old car donated by Lone Star RV Center.

Among the more serious activities was a face-painting booth by the HHHS chapter of the nationwide Invisible Children Inc., supervised by history teacher Allyson Easton.

Chapter member Megan Paine, a sophomore, explained, "We send the money to our national headquarters, which uses it to help children drafted into armies in Africa and other places."

The group rebuilds schools and sponsors scholarships.

The Knights' homecoming game will be against A&M Consolidated High School of College Station Friday in Leo Buckley Stadium in Killeen.

Students have already voted for a homecoming king and queen, who will be announced at the game. This week at school, said carnival sponsor Stephanie Kelso, a chemistry teacher, every day will be festive.

During Spirit Week, Tuesday will be Tacky Tuesday, Wednesday will be a nostalgic Way Back Wednesday, Thursday will be a country and western Texas Thursday, and Friday will be Spirit Day with school colors flashing everywhere. A community pep rally is planned Wednesday. The homecoming dance will be Saturday at the school.

"This is our school's 10th anniversary," Kelso said, "and lots of former members of school organizations are planning their own reunions. The whole thing is going to be big."
