Cavalry 96 Black shows grit in Austin Cup final

Playing from behind much of the tournament, the Tri-County Cavalry 96 Black team fought their way into the Austin Labor Day Cup final only to go down 3-2 to the Texas Rush. In a tough draw, where only a few minutes lapse in defense can cost you the tournament, the Cavs came from behind in critical games to secure their place in the semifinal and to get to the final.

Six minutes into the second half of the final, the Cavs took a 2-1 lead when Nathan Diederich scored his 11th goal of the tournament on a pass from Alder Barrios and drilled it past the charging goalie. Two minutes earlier, Roberto Barrios scored on a header when Diederich assisted with a cross from the right side.

This was a familiar score. The Black had led the Rush 2-1 in the first game of group play before losing 4-2. It looked like this time, though, the Cavalry defense would hold the lead until a penalty kick was awarded to the Rush. Though Cavalry goalie Mason Kidwell had a dozen saves for the tournament, he was caught out of position late in the second half when the Rush pushed through the winning goal and claimed the championship.

In the semifinal against Arsenal, a last-second goal by Diederich tied the match to force a decision by penalty kicks. They won 4-2 in PKs. Down by two in the second half, the Cavs defense, led by Jonathan Madera, shut down a fast Arsenal team. The offense took the cue and Diederich scored midway through the half on a looping shot when he caught the goalie out of position. Diederich emerged from a crowded Arsenal defense to score the equalizer just seconds before regulation time was called.

To get to the semifinal, the Black faced a must-win against the Buffaloes. Although the Buffaloes dominated possession early in the first half, Kidwell made key saves and Malik Zenon led a stingy defense that refused any ball. The Cavalry took the advantage in a tough defensive battle when Layne Broiher assisted with a line-drive pass to Roberto Barrios, who redirected a header into the left side of the net. Diederich secured the win with a goal in the 22nd minute of the second half from the right side. Kidwell and the defense scored a shutout by holding on to a 2-0 win.
