Wednesday was a special day for the Killeen Food Care Center.

Through the Rent-A-Center Random Act of Caring initiative, the Food Care Center received a donation of dining room sets, electronic items, beds and a $1,000 check to purchase food.

"This my second Random Act of Caring. We started Random Acts of Caring two years ago," Rent-A-Center Divisional Vice President David Ewbank said. "There is no application process or anything like that; we just try to find people who need help and go and help them."

Food Care Center Co-executive Director Ann Farris said the center can provide a meal for 14 cents, so with the $1,000 donation, it can provide 7,000 meals. The center has operated in Killeen for 21 years and is open to the public with no qualification criteria.

"People come once a month, and we try to give them enough for meals for 10 days and they can come again the next month," Farris said.

The donation ceremony was attended by Food Care Center staff, Rent-A-Center employees, members of the business community and state Sen. Troy Fraser, R-Horseshoe Bay.

This is a good time for the donation because so many are feeling the effects of the recession and are needing assistance, Fraser said.

Even when the center's staff has doubts there will be enough food each day, the community has come forward with donations to allow the center to provide much-needed services to the area.

"We fill out grants of 50 to 60 pages with lots of information to get funding. For Rent-A-Center to call and say 'this is for you and you get to define what it is and there is no paperwork' is like the tooth fairy, and it doesn't happen very often," Farris said.

"We were able to go to the store and see what they had. We were able to match that to the client's needs and it makes this the perfect type of gift that comes from the heart."
