A two-time national champion himself, Manny DaCosta helped 18 students of his Shotokan Karate School bring home medals last year at the USA National Karate-Do Federation 2008 national championships in Houston.

This year, though, he's trying to do more with less, as nine students and himself travel to compete at the 2009 nationals this weekend in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

"What's amazing about these kids is it doesn't happen by accident," DaCosta said by phone from Florida. "It takes practice, dedication, and they were all able to master those attributes."

With kids ranging in ages from 7-16, the Shotokan students include seven first-time competitors at the national level, and two returners from last year's trip.

"They are really enthusiastic about becoming champions," DaCosta said. "They look at the examples of their peers and they really want to participate and practice their skills."

Among those competing this year will include six state champions who brought home gold from the Texas Regional tournament last month in San Antonio.
