Killeen Daily HeraldBELTON — Todd Andersen was born and raised in the greater Houston area and still resides there, but he also enjoys Central Texas.
Andersen, a 1995 Baylor graduate, loves the Fourth of July Rodeo in Belton, and has consistently competed in the event since 1994. And after Friday, Andersen is the overall leader in the steer wrestling after posting a time of 4.2 seconds at the Bell County Expo Center.
"That steer I had to wrestle had a bit of a hesitation in his start, so I had to make sure I had enough horse power to catch him," Andersen said. "Once I did, I felt pretty good."
Andersen also gave thanks to a higher power following his event.
"I give all glory to God and my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for giving me the ability to do this," he said.
One thing Andersen likes about the Fourth of July Rodeo is the indoor facility of the Expo Center.
"In this 105-degree heat, it's great to be able to compete indoors for a change," he said. "I love this rodeo and try to compete in it every year. It's a first-class event."
Andersen wasn't the only competitor who took the lead in an event Friday. George Rowland of Paradise now sits in first place after a time of 7.8 in the tiedown roping.
Rowland was the runner-up a year ago, his first on the PRCA circuit.
"I put a lot of extra effort into this event," Rowland said. "I was so close to winning last year and I would love to win this year."
Rowland does have the luxury of a better time this year. He finished one second better than last year's time of 8.8.
"I drew a better calf this year as well," he said.
In other events, Zane Caddell of La Grange was the top finisher in the bareback ride with a score of 72. However, he currently sits in fourth overall.
T.J. Haynie of Richards had the top score in Friday's saddle bronc riding with a 70. Haynie sits in third.
Jamon Turner of Big Spring rode "Thunder Struck" to post an 81 to take the lead in the bull riding. Cody Wood of Weatherford rode "Hat Dancer" to post a 68, and currently sits in second in the event.
The results from Friday's team roping and barrel racing were unavailable at press time.
