A 6-year-old boy was hospitalized Wednesday with serious burns following an apartment fire in Killeen.
At about 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, the Killeen Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 1100 block of Garth
Dr., according to a Killeen Fire Marshal's Office news release.
The 6-year-old was found with first and second degree burns covering about 20 to 30 percent of his body, the release stated. The child was taken to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center and was later transferred to the burn unit at Brooke Army Medical Center at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio.
The boy's mother received minor burns to her hands and the apartment, where the fire occurred, only sustained minor fire and smoke damage, stated the news release.
There was no extension to any other units in the building. Chris Mahlstedt, fire/arson investigator, stated in the news release that the Killeen Fire Marshal's Office determined the cause of the fire to be accidental.
