TodayThe Military Child Education Coalition is hosting a "Tell Me a Story" event from 3 to 5 p.m. Nov. 22 at the Mayborn Planetarium and Space Center, 6200 W. Central Texas Expressway, Killeen. A special Fort Hood guest will read "Night Catch" by Brenda Ehrmantraut. The planetarium will host a star talk with the book reading and offer a free showing of "Secret of the Cardboard Rocket" that starts at 5 p.m. Tell Me A Story was created to empower military children by using literature and their own stories. The events are geared toward children ages 4 to 12. Each family will receive a copy of "Night Catch." Hands-on activities, snacks and a fun learning experience will be provided. Friday through Jan. 3For the 13th year, Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area has been transformed into a winter wonderland. Visitors can drive through the 800–acre park and enjoy illuminated displays, ranging in size from a single strand of lights to scenes spanning 40 feet high and 300 feet wide. Guests can also shop for gifts, take photographs with Santa and enjoy homemade cookies, hot chocolate and other treats at Santa's Village Thursdays through Sundays. The entry fee is $5 per passenger vehicle, with additional fees for larger vehicles. Nature in Lights is open to the public. A military ID card is not required at the Sparta Road entrance. FridayThe two-year anniversary of the Army Family Covenant presents an opportunity to recognize the Army's achievements and renew the commitment to soldiers and families. Fort Hood and III Corps' commander, LTG Robert Cone, will be on hand to sign the Army Family Covenant. Participants can see a Family First Corps video and a patriotic musical performance. Through SundayCome by Phantom Warrior Lanes for the annual Turkey Bowl extravaganza. Obtain a punch card with your purchase of a bowling game; bowl 10 games and get 10 punches in your card. Once you have 10 punches, submit your card for the Thanksgiving turkey giveaway. There will be five drawings, five chances to win. To receive a punch, the game must be played during open bowl. Open bowl is 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday ($1.75/game) and 5 p.m. to midnight Monday through Sunday ($3.25/game). You cannot receive a punch during league play, Family night on Monday evenings or Xtreme Bowling on Friday and Saturday nights. Monday through Dec. 4"The Lost Heroes Art Quilt: A Gift to the Nation" honors the fallen heroes of Iraq and Afghanistan. The quilt continues its national tour with a stop at Fort Hood next week. Come pay tribute to fallen heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The Lost Heroes Art Quilt book will be on sale at the Clear Creek and Warrior Way PX. Proceeds are given to Snowball Express, a charity benefiting children of fallen soldiers. The event is free and open to all. The quilt will be on display Monday through Nov. 27 at III Corps headquarters, Building 1001, 761st Tank Battalion and Nov. 30 through Dec. 4 at Survivor Outreach Services, Building 10043, Battalion Avenue. Dec. 11 Bring your vehicle, car or booster seat and your child for a safety lesson from trained technicians. New state law now requires all children 8 years of age and younger to ride in a proper child safety seat, regardless of their weight or height. Dec. 19It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, at least in the Community Events Center. Everyone loves Bingo and now it's time for Fort Hood's youth to take in the action. The Annual Children's Christmas Bingo returns to the Community Events Center December 19 for a day filled with great fun, food and prizes. Five dollars will get each contestant 10 games of Bingo and lunch. The doors open at 10 a.m. with the games starting at 11 a.m. Register soon, limited space is available. OngoingChild, Youth and School Services currently has slots available for your child in the dynamic preschool program. Give your child the head start they deserve with a low staff to child ratio, individualized curriculum, creative classes and much more. Classes are available for children 3 to 5 years old. Specially designed for 4-year-olds, the Strong Beginnings program focuses on the development of school readiness skills and includes daily writing and math samples, SKIESUnlimited instructional classes and your child's yearly progress is tracked. Children must have turned 4 on or about Sept. 1 of the enrollment year. All classes are held on Fort Hood at the child development centers. The exciting workout combines a variety of rhythms including salsa, merengue, samba, belly dancing, cumbia, flamenco, reggaeton and more. The time to start building a healthy lifestyle with your child is now. Zumbatomic is free and open to youth of all ages registered with Child, Youth and School Services. Parents are encouraged to participate with their child. Join Youth Sports and Fitness for this exciting new program from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Meadows Elementary School Gym. Child, Youth and School Services registration is open to active duty and active duty reservists, family members of military personnel, Defense Department, appropriated and non-appropriated fund employees and contractors. ThursdaysLearn to dance like the stars. Ballroom dance classes are back with a new day and time. Join the Skate and Aerobics Center for a new dance style from 7 to 8 p.m. every Thursday. The cost is $10 per session and classes are open to soldiers and families, airmen, reservists, retirees and their families, Defense Department civilian employees and one guest.
